Andy began marching with the Blue Knights in 1994 playing the soprano bugle. He stayed with the corps until he aged out as the drum major in 1999. Andy began teaching the corps the summer after he aged out and has been almost constantly ever since. He has served as section leader, horn sergeant, he has taught each section of the brass individually as a technician, and he has served as the brass caption head for 5 years as of 2010. Andy also coauthored a brass technique manual with his colleagues on the Blue Knights brass staff. The Blue Knights use this manual as the basis for their approach to brass ensemble performance skills. This manual is one of the required materials for anyone who wants to audition for the BK brass line. Part of Andy’s private lesson plan is to train potential Blue Knights for their auditions, and membership in the corps. There are other BK brass teachers offering the same service specializing in different instruments.
